Yetta Kurland, City Council Candidate for the 3rd District will be Keynote Speaker at Bronx Pride - Saturday August 21st.

New York, NY. August 21, 2009. Today will mark the fourth annual celebration of Pride in the Bronx. Yetta Kurland, a candidate for City Council in the 3rd District, a district known for having a large LGBT population, will be the keynote speaker at the event.

"This is a year for change, hope and opportunity, and it is an honor to be a part of the 4th annual Bronx celebration of Pride. The LGBT community in the Bronx is finding its voice, and I am proud as a member of the LGBT community to be here to show support."

Kurland is running a campaign that many say is overtaking incumbent Christine Quinn's efforts to stay in office for a 3rd term, running on a platform of restoring the voice of her community.

This year's day long event includes musical performances and starts at 12pm in Barretto Point Park. The theme of the Pride is "We Matter".

Sunday, July 12, come for brunch and stay for change!

What: An intimate brunch with Yetta G. Kurland
When: Sunday, July 12 12pm - 4pm
Where: JivamukTea Cafe, 841 Broadway, 2nd Floor

JivamukTea Cafe in Union Square is hosting a very special brunch benefiting NYLHV with guest Yetta G. Kurland. Yetta is a vegan civil rights attorney who is running for City Council in the 3rd Council District, which includes the West Village, Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen.

This race is particularly important because Yetta is running against Christine Quinn, the animals' #1 opponent in City government. Quinn has blocked and/or opposed numerous bills to protect animal welfare, including the pets in housing bill and the carriage horse ban. Under her leadership, NYLHV's entire legislative agenda has been stalled, despite overwhelming support from the majority of the City Council.

We need your help to get Yetta elected and defeat Christine Quinn! Please join us for brunch, meet Yetta and learn how you can get involved. As an added bonus, JivamukTea Cafe is donating 20% of the brunch profits to NYLHV.

CBST is under attack by the Westboro Baptist Church

CBST has received warning that members of the Westboro Baptist Church are coming to protest against our congregation this Sunday at our Bethune Street location. They have targeted other New York synagogues this weekend.

Led by Fred Phelps, the Westboro Baptist Church is a hatemongering organization known most widely for picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, for their protests at the funerals of servicemen killed in Iraq, and most recently, for protesting at the funeral of Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, the security officer killed at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington.

We are responding in two ways:

CBST will be holding a non-violent prayer vigil and service during the time of their protest. We cannot allow this group to go unchallenged as they engage in hateful speech at our synagogue. The most powerful response to such hatred is our demonstration of what makes us strong and powerful in the face of bigotry. We will not engage in any confrontational action or shouting matches. They would love it if we were to lose our composure. We will present who we are in a strong and meaningful way.

If you have a tallit, please bring it. If you would like to make colorful signs, please consider using:

"We are all created in God's image"
"God loves all of us"
"God made me gay"
and similar messages

8:45 AM on Sunday, June 21st at our Bethune location

Inspired by a gift from Mitchell Gold, CBST will be participating, as many other LGBT organizations have, in a fundraising effort to counteract the attacks on us by this group.

Mitchell Gold has pledged $10 per minute that the Westboro Baptist Church representatives are picketing us. Their presence will benefit us! We can tell them each minute how much they are raising for us!!
To make a donation of another amount click here to make donation!!

Once the total amount has been raised, we will be sending an acknowledgement letter to the church to let them know that their appearance helped to raise money to support LGBT causes. Many other organizations around the country have done this and raised funds to defeat those who would attack us. (check out phelps-a-thon.com to be inspired by other stories like ours).
As of the writing of this email, we have already raised $40 per minute!

A Community Forum: the Crisis of Small Arts Businesses & Related Small Businesses in the 3rd District
A Panel Discussion with New York City Council Candidate Yetta Kurland, as well as Other Community Leaders

Wednesday, May 20th from 5pm to 7pm
‘The Tank’
354 W. 45th Street, between 8th & 9th Avenue

The Theater District in New York City is an intricate web of numerous individual, but interdependent, small & mid-sized businesses ranging from theaters, restaurants & shops, to performance venues, bars & hotels, that support each other & work to create the most vibrant live performance venue in the world - Broadway.  It also generates literally billions of dollars every year & puts New York City on the map as a tourist destination & as the world leader in theater.
The recent financial meltdown has significantly impacted all of New York City, with small business being dramatically effected by this.
In the spirit of community based organizing & problem solving, Yetta Kurland, a candidate for City Council in the 3rd District, has put together a panel discussion of artists, small arts business owners & small business owners in the theater district who are impacted by the arts & entertainment industry, along with community members & other community leaders to discuss where we are & what we need to do to make sure arts in this City is protected & survives the current economic downturn.
Come listen & add to the discussion, in an effort to come up with a solution to help ensure small businesses & the arts in our community, survive this difficult time.
